For a very long time, Africa has relied on foreign aid, and now that this capital has dried up, the cracks are showing. But, real work led by Africans has always been underway.
In Kenya, organisations like Kwanda are bridging the gap by creating real, lasting social and economic impact from within. They invest in sustainable, locally-led initiatives, mostly in rural communities, to improve the quality of people’s lives all around Africa.
Flutterwave, Paystack and Moniepoint have made such massive impact in payments that Nigeria is regarded as the MVP of African fintech. These companies are building solid bridges for payments, business growth and cross-border commerce. Venture capital is now used mainly to fuel their innovation and expansion in Africa.
Ghana’s Ako Fresh is helping farmers reduce post-harvest losses with solar-powered storage. mPharma, a healthtech startup also in Ghana is improving access to essential medicines by working with hospitals and pharmacies to reduce drug prices. mPharma also operates in Zambia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, Kenya is a hotspot for real estate, and co-investment collectives like Diaspora House are making property ownership accessible for African diaspora investors.
